Joseph Childers, PhD, MPhil, MA
Appointed the University Provost on October 1, 2016, Dr. Joseph Childers is responsible for overseeing SGU’s academic units, academic centers and initiatives, and student services, providing leadership for the planning, development, implementation, assessment, and improvement of all academic programs, policies, and supporting infrastructure for the Grenada campus.
Dr. Childers came to SGU after serving as Dean of the Graduate Division at University of California, Riverside (UCR) for eight years, overseeing increases in graduate student diversity and student success, garnering national attention as institutional models and best practices. He was also a Professor of English at UCR for more than 25 years, authored two books, and published numerous articles and essays on a wide variety of topics. In addition, he is the co-editor of two collections, Victorian Prism: Refractions of the Crystal and Sublime Economy: On the Intersection of Art and Economics.
Dr. Childers earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Arkansas, and later went on to obtain a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University. He is married to Karen Pyke, who joined SGU as a Visiting Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences.
