Fixing playback issues on Windows

Issues:

There are several quirks with Windows, Windows Media Player that can cause the playback of Mediasite presentations to fail. Here are some things to look into when playback doesn't work.

Fixes:

  • Uninstall then reinstall the latest version of Windows Media Player*
  • Open Windows Media Player
  • Go to the Tools --> Options --> Player Tab. Check the "Connect to the Internet" option.
  • Go to the Tools --> Options --> Performance menu. Choose a reasonable connection speed, taking into consideration your connectivity and the bitrate of the content you are attempting to view.

* If you are using vista you can try the following to reinstate Windows Media Player:

  • Close Windows Media Player. (To do this, on the File menu, click Exit.)
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the Run dialog box, type the following (exactly as shown):
    %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Media
This step opens the following folder on your computer:
    SystemDrive:\Users\UserProfileName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Media
  • In this folder, rename the folder 11.0 to 11.0.bak.

Player Load Error

Issue:

Symantec Related

Fix:

These errors can be caused by settings in Symantec Client Security. Try making the following changes in the Ad Blocking Module:

Go to Configure --> Advanced --> Add Site, and then add the root of the site that is hosting the Mediasite content. For example if the content is coming from stream.sgu.edu*, then add.

On the Add Blocking tab go to Add --> Select Permit, and then add the root of the site here as well (stream.sgu.edu)*.

Note:

Different Symantec and other firewalls programs might cause the same or related error. Ensure that you add the Mediasite root URL to their trusted zones or sites to ensure that Mediasite content can be viewed.

Root URLs for SGU Mediasite:

The following are the root URLs that SGU uses:
True Blue Campus: stream.sgu.edu
Northumbria Campus: unn.stream.sgu.edu

Unknown State Type

Issue:

Fix:

Remove UDP in Windows Media Player:

  • Open Windows Media Player
  • Go to Tool menu select Options
  • Select the Network Tab
  • Deselect RTSP/UDP
  • Click OK
  • Close browsers then re-open a Mediasite presentation

No Double Speed on Firefox (Windows Version Only)

When viewing Mediasite 5.x content, Silverlight is used by default. If Silverlight is not installed, then the Port25 plug-in will be used. If the neither Silverlight nor the Port25 plug-in is not installed, then the user will be prompted to install Silverlight.

Issue:

The double speed option is not available in Firefox on a Windows operating system. This is due to the fact that Firefox is using Silverlight to stream the presentations.*

Fix:

  • In order to stream Mediasite presentations using Windows Media Player plug-in and the Active X features, download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Add-On
  • After downloading the plug-in open Firefox go to Tool -> Add-ons.
Scroll down to the Silverlight Plug-in and click on Disable
  • Try streaming your Mediasite presentation. Once you can successfully see the speed adjustment feature go to Tool -> Add-ons.
Scroll down to the Silverlight Plug-in and click on Enable

* Silverlight does not currently support adjusting the playback speed. This is a limitation of Silverlight and not something that Sonic Foundry can control

Video is green or multicolored squares during playback

Issue:

When viewing a Mediasite presentation the video window is green, or it may be made up of multicolored squares. This issue is most common when using Windows Media Player 10.

Fix:

If using Windows Media Player 10, this can be fixed by upgrading to Windows Media Player 11, or by installing a patch from Microsoft here.

Link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898549

If upgrading Windows Media Player is not possible, or if a newer version is already installed, then try lowering the video acceleration:

  • Go to Tools --> Options.
  • Click on the Performance tab.
  • Move the Video Acceleration slider to the middle.
  • Click Apply and OK.

If that does not work, then try this:

  • Go to Tools --> Options.
  • Click on the Performance tab.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Deselect Video Mixing Rendering
  • Click Apply and OK.

It is recommended that if you are having trouble playing Mediasite presentations to try and access the links in another browser.

Note that Safari and Chrome use Silverlight plug-in to stream media content from Mediasite and therefore are not subject to Windows Media Player codec errors. However, they can not play presentations at slow or fast speeds.

Please also note that presentation streams are affected by limited internet bandwidth.

If you are not seeing the error message you are getting here, please stop by the IT Help Desk or open a SHOR (shor.sgu.edu) request.

NOTE: When creating your SHOR request please indicate the following:

1. The exact error you are getting.
2. The operating system you are using (ex. Mac OS, Linux, XP, Vista, etc).
3. Which browser you are currently using.
4. The presentation you are trying to access (date, time, and presentation name)
5. It would be helpful if you also indicate the date and time you were trying to access the links and whether you are having trouble accessing the link on or/and off campus.
