PTHB 506 Veterinary Pathology I

(4 cr.) (Didactic 3 cr./Laboratory 1 cr.) Pathology I is composed of 53 one-hour didactic lectures mixed with interactive clinical case investigations. In addition, there are seven two- hour laboratory sessions that utilize small group exercises and hands-on learninopportunities with animal tissues and/or simulations. This course serves as an introduction to the discipline and service of veterinary pathology. In this course, Term 3 DVM students are expected to integrate knowledge fromultiple disciplines (anatomy, physiology, embryology, histology, microbiology, virology, parasitology, etc.and develop their aptitude for conceptual learning and problembased medicine. Through a series of didactilectures and interactive laboratory sessions, students will learn the fundamental mechanisms of tissue injury and disease (general pathology). Students will then continue the study of veterinary disease with a systematiapproach focused on individual organ systems and the irrespective diseases (systems pathology). In addition, students will also receive an introduction to the clinical service of diagnostic pathology and the relevance of this service to their clinical career.
