Assistant Director of Communications

This post reports to the Co-Directors of OUC.  The OUC plans and implements communications for the University which include: media relations, staff, faculty, parent and web communications.  This post supports the design and implementation of communications projects, both internal and external, including written, electronic and visual communications.   

Responsibilities:

  • Provide prompt responses and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external constituents.   Must liaise on a regular basis with the Office of the Provost.
  • Work within the OUC to create outreach to local and regional media to enhance the reputation and image of the University.
  • Respond to media requests, including planning of press conferences, writing press releases and advisories. 
  • Play an important supporting role in all aspects of university communication and crisis communication planning and execution.
  • Work closely with the Office of University Publications to ensure continuous, coherent outbound messages from the University.
  • Work closely with the Communications Team to prepare drafts of communications risk assessments and recommendations
  • Facilitate diligent communications within the University to ensure effective delivery of desired messages.
  • Oversee the development of SGU 107.5 FM
  • The post requires flexible working hours.

Post Requirements:

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including assessment of critical communications concerns, development and execution of communication plans for external and internal audiences.
  • Skills necessary to support creation, development and implementation of comprehensive and effective long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field.
  • Critical communications experience of 3-5 years should include advanced writing skills, particularly news writing skills, and the ability to write on deadline.
  • Familiarity with the university and/or current affairs issues and concerns facing higher education, desired.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal communications and active listening skills.
  • Highly developed analytical, critical thinking, and problem recognition skills.
  • Well-developed skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Drivers’ License
