"Firefly" (Wireless Internet) Policy

Only by controlling certain radio frequencies can St. George's University ensure an acceptable level of network service and data security. In this mission, SGU reserves the right to regulate the specific radio frequencies that Firefly needs to operate smoothly.

2.4 and 5 GHz Airspace Policy

The following information specifies St. George's University's 2.4 and 5 GHz radio spectrum policy.

To ensure a properly working and universally accessible wireless network, SGU now prohibits the use of equipment that interferes with Firefly's wireless transmissions. This means that you can not operate Apple AirPort base station hardware or software, Lucent's RG-1000 base station, Linksys wireless Access Points or other similar equipment in, on or near university-owned or buildings, including classrooms, laboratories, offices, dorm rooms, and any other university-managed buildings.

Other equipment that operates in the 2.4 or 5 GHz radio spectrum—including all Bluetooth devices, 802.11a/b/g devices, some cordless phones and virtually all microwave ovens—may also cause problems with Firefly. Upon notification from SGU's Information Technology office, you must turn off any device causing such interference. The university assumes no responsibility to compensate you for any direct or incidental costs related to turning off the interfering equipment.

Requesting Exceptions to this Policy

Specific temporary exceptions to this policy may be granted by SGU's Office of Information Technology to address needs in areas that are not immediately served by the Firefly network or for other reasons deemed appropriate or necessary by this office.

Requests for temporary exceptions to this policy must be submitted in writing (e-mail is acceptable: send to helpdesk@sgu.edu or create a SHOR ticket) and include the following information:

  • Which equipment is to be operated;
  • Its location;
  • The reason for its use;
  • The time period for which the exception is requested.

The Office of Information Technology will make all decisions on exceptions to the airspace policy. We will normally respond to requests within one or two days; final decisions may take longer if we need to do an analysis of signal strengths in the exception area.
