Computer Recommendations

The Office of Information Technology continually upgrades the network at SGU and increases the number of on-campus computers available for student use.

  • If you bring your own personal computer, monitor, or printer be advised that the electricity available on the island is 220volts, 50Hz. Most AC power supply/transformers that come with a notebook computer can accommodate this but you may have to make arrangements for your desktop computer.
  • You will be able to connect your computer directly to the Internet via the SGU local area network or via 802.11a/b/g wireless. Please refer to the FireFly Zone Map.
  • In addition you can access the Internet via:
    • On-campus student computers
    • Caribsurf, using your personal computer and a modem. (Applications will be available during orientation. You can also arrange for a telephone line in your dorm room.)
    • Caribsurf, using your personal computer and an ADSL circuit supplied by Cable and Wireless.
  • We strongly recommend that students entering the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine bring a notebook computer with them. Much of the material presented in the Medical School Anatomical Sciences (1st Term) and in Pathology and Microbiology (4th Term) has already been converted to electronic format. In addition, many materials included in theVeterinary Medicine curriculum are in electronic format as well.
  • The minimum suggested hardware requirements for notebook computers brought to the campus are listed below:
    • Intel Centrino CPU and chipset
    • Windows XP Home Edition
    • 256MB of RAM
    • 40GB hard drive
    • CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive
    • 1024x768 resolution display
    • On-board sound
    • 56K internal modem
    • 10/100 Ethernet network adapter
    • 802.11a/b/g wireless network adapter
    • 1 USB port
    • 1 PC Card slot
    • Universal 110-230V power supply.
  • Most desktop computers have a switch on the back that will allow them to convert to 220 volts. However, if your computer will only use 110 volts/60 Hz, and you purchase a step-down transformer, the current on Grenada is 50 Hz, and many computers will not tolerate this.
Monitors

Monitors should be rated for 220volts and 50Hz. Refer to the manufacturer's documentation for this information.
