Receiving SGU EMail Using Hotmail

The following instructions are from the Hotmail website, with SGU-specific additions.

To set up Hotmail to access messages in a POP (Post Office Protocol) e-mail account, such as your SGU e-mail account:

Click “Options” on the horizontal navigation bar. You can also click “POP Mail” under “Services” on your Inbox page.

On the “Options” page, click “POP Mail.”

On the “POP Server Settings” page, provide the following information:

  • POP Server Name: The server name of the POP account you want Hotmail to get messages from:
    • For Grenada-based faculty and staff:gmail1.sgu.edu
    • For all students:gmail3.sgu.edu
    • For U.S.-based staff:bmail.sgu.edu
  • POP User Name: Your e-mail name for that account.
  • POP User Password: Your password for that account.
  • Server Timeout: The number of seconds you want Hotmail to try to access your POP account.
  • Port Number: The port number for POP mail, usually 110.

Note: Certain ISPs (Internet Service Providers) prohibit external SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ) services to route through their environment. If you find that you are unable to send Outgoing Mail after completing this configuration, try using the SMTP Outgoing mail settings recommended by your ISP in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field. These settings can usually be found on their website.

Select the “Leave messages on POP server” check box if you want to keep a copy of all POP mail on the POP server.

Select the “Download new messages only” check box if you want to copy new messages from your POP account to your Hotmail Inbox.

Choose a “New Mail Indicator” symbol. Using a unique symbol for each POP account makes it easier to identify the account a message is from in your Hotmail Inbox.

Click “OK” to view your SGU mail from the Hotmail inbox; click on the "POP mail" button under "Services" on the left side navigation bar.
