Receiving SGU Email Using a POP3 Client

Students can create and view SGU e-mail by using a web browser such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, version 5.x or greater, or Netscape's Navigator/Communicator, versions 4.7 or greater, any place where an Internet connection exists. Navigate your browser to SGU's Members Center, and enter your SGU username and password. From this interface you can read, reply to and create e-mail.

However, this method may be slow if you are using a dial-up connection. Some students prefer to use a third-party client, such as Outlook Express, or such web-based e-mail clients as Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail instead. To find instructions on how to set up these programs, click on the Computing at SGU link in the Members Center of the SGU website.

If you choose to use a different web-mail or third-party client, you'll need the following information in order to set it up.

Incoming Mail Server (POP3 mail server - Ø means "zero"):

  • For Grenada-based faculty and staff:
    gmail1.sgu.edu
  • For all students:
    gmail3.sgu.edu
  • For US-based staff:
    bmail.sgu.edu

Note: Certain ISPs (Internet Service Providers) prohibit external SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ) services to route through their environment. If you find that you are unable to send Outgoing Mail after completing this configuration, try using the SMTP Outgoing mail settings recommended by your ISP in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field. These settings can usually be found on their website.

Outgoing Mail Server

The Outgoing Mail Server Address is supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if you choose to use your ISP's -mail server. If you are not satisfied with your ISP's service and want another choice, or if your ISP will not permit you to send outgoing messages through its e-mail server, SGU offers its own SMTP service. To use it, you will need to enter the following in the SMTP Server Name Field to configure SGU's SMTP service:

  • smtp3.sgu.edu

AOL Users

Note: AOL accounts cannot be configured to receive POP3 e-mail and cannot accept SGU e-mail sent to an AOL mailbox. If you choose to use the regular AOL interface to receive your SGU e-mail, you'll need to set up Microsoft Outlook Express (or Netscape Messenger, Eudora Lite or another e-mail client) to download your SGU e-mail to your local computer.
