St. George’s University offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in a variety of professional areas including, but not limited to, medicine, public health, veterinary medicine, and business administration.  A comprehensive university serving the eastern Caribbean, St. George’s supports the finest library in the eastern Caribbean, the WINDREF research institute, and an undergraduate liberal arts program.

The Director of Student Academic Development and Support will serve under the Chair of the Department of Educational Services and will direct a multi-faceted student development and support program.  The Director will organize and oversee activities and systems aiming to enhance student academic performance.  The activities of the Center include an ESL/Language Development office, oversight of supplemental instruction activities, train and supervise a group of part-time educators who, in turn, oversee a large program of organized review tutorials.  Additionally, the Director will have responsibility for design of support mechanisms for students admitted to an academic enhancement program.  An Alternate Pathway, currently being developed for students who prefer or who require a different approach to learning will fall under the aegis of the Director.  The Director will also be responsible to develop, perhaps to present and certainly to oversee, a series of workshops focusing on test taking, learning skills, anxiety management, and time management.  Finally, the Director will participate in the design of individual educational programs of students on academic probation, meeting individually with those students to assess their specific needs. 

As a senior faculty member, the Director may be required to serve on a variety of faculty committees, possibly including (for example) curriculum committee of academic progress committee

The Director will meet periodically with individual faculty members to ascertain the needs with respect to the organized group tutorials offered by the Department of Educational Services.  In all faculty contacts, the Director will work collaboratively with the Director of Faculty Development, also in the Department of Educational Services. 

Finally, the Director will serve as a consultant to faculty and to administration concerning curricular issues as those issues affect individual students or groups of students.

In the execution of the foregoing duties, the Director will oversee the work of approximately 6 full time and 5 part time faculty and 40-80 part time review group facilitators.

Requirements:

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
  • 5-7 years of experience in student academic development and support activities.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly to critical matters, and the ability to differentiate those critical matters from the more routine matters.
  • Ability to assess the quality of performance of individual students in a wide variety of basic science subjects and to offer recommendations to enhance the performance.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience in professional schools, preferably medical schools.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in standard spreadsheet, word processing, power point, and data bases.
  • Experience in the presentation of professional papers.
  • Experience in the preparation and publication of professional papers.
  • 7-10 years of teaching experience, including at least 3 years in postsecondary education.
  • Experience in dealing with confidential information.

Education requirement:
Earned terminal research degree (PhD or EdD), with first degree in a science discipline preferred.
