Program Outline

Academic Programs
The Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine, in collaboration with the Department of Para-Clinical Studies in the School of Veterinary Medicine, offers several avenues for obtaining an MPH degree or an MSPH degree:

A free-standing MPH program
A free-standing MSPH program
A dual MD/MPH degree program
A dual DVM/MPH degree program

Students in the public health degree programs are offered the option of specializing or concentrating in one of the following four tracks.

Public Health Tracks
Epidemiology Track
Health Behavior and Policy Track
Environmental and Occupational Health Track
Veterinary Public Health Track (This track is reserved for students in the dual DVM/MPH degree program)

Free-standing MPH and MSPH Students

Free-standing MPH and MSPH students can enter the program at the beginning of any term: August, February or May.  In general, free-standing students have quite a bit of discretion in that they can take as many or as few courses as their degree completion plans, time, resources and academic ability will allow.  Each student can have an individually tailored schedule of courses worked out with his/her Faculty Advisor; however, because the availability of courses is regularized and predictable, students should plan their entire course with their Faculty Advisor at their initial advisement session.  Those students who are expected to have, or later turn out to have, academic difficulties can be advised to reduce their course loads so that they are afforded the opportunity to concentrate on the courses that challenge their ambition to earn a public health graduate degree. MSPH students can also expect to invest additional time, in general, in their research and thesis preparation activities.
