Courses in the Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Public Health Programs are offered according to a trimester system. The following three 10-week terms cycles annually, with each term providing the opportunity to take the respectively presented courses:
Fall Term (August 20 or nearest Monday to October 26 or nearest Friday)
Early Spring Term (January 19 or nearest Monday to March 27 or nearest Friday)
Late Spring Term (April 14 or nearest Monday to June 6 or nearest Friday)
The only exception to this standardized schedule is the Practicum in Public Health required for the MPH degree. These 240 hours of applied public health practice can be completed at any time that is mutually convenient to the student and to the practicum site. Theoretically, an MD/MPH or a DVM/MPH student can complete the program in slightly more than a calendar year, while a free-standing MPH student can complete the program within a calendar year. Note that all classroom-based courses are standardized as 3 credit experiences; each requiring 6 person/hours of classroom contact in each of 8 weeks. This is based on the guideline that 1 credit is equivalent to 16 hours of classroom contact. In each 8-week course, therefore, 3 credits are earned in two 3-hour sessions per week. Because of the relatively brief duration of these courses, students are only permitted to add or withdraw from them during the first week of classes.
