Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine (BS/MD) Dual Degree

The dual Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine Degree program is designed to meet the needs of our Premedical students who do not hold a first degree and wish to earn a Baccalaureate degree at St. George's University.

Premedical students enrolled in this bachelor degree program who continue into the first year of the medical sciences may complete the requirements for a Bachelor degree in the medical sciences after completion of the first year of the medical sciences.

Students who directly enter the third year of the Premedical Sciences (with Advanced Levels or an International Baccalaureate) have to complete additional coursework to be eligible for this degree. Applicants interested in this program will be evaluated for transfer credit.

Only qualified Premedical students who are enrolled in the BS/MD degree program will be eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science degree at the end of the first year of the medical program.

Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (BS/DVM) Degree Program

The dual Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree program is designed to meet the needs of our preveterinary students who do not hold a first degree and wish to earn a baccalaureate degree at St. George's University while pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

Preveterinary students who continue into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine phase may complete the requirements for a BS degree in the Life Sciences after completion of the first year of the veterinary medical phase.

This program allows students to complete their entire DVM education in seven years, while simultaneously completing the requirements for a baccalaureate degree.  The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded at the successful conclusion of the veterinary medical phase, and the DVM is obtained upon successful completion of the fourth clinical year component of the DVM curriculum.

Students who are accepted into Term 1, Year 1 of the preveterinary phase and meet sufficient academic progress guidelines are eligible for both the baccalaureate degree and the Veterinary Medicine degree.

Students who directly enter the third year of preveterinary medicine (with Advanced Levels, International Baccalaureate or CAPE) must complete additional course work to be eligible for this degree.  Applicants interested in this program will be evaluated for transfer credit.

The MD/MSc dual degree program is designed for medical students with a desire to become involved with original, thesis-oriented research and provides students with additional credentials when seeking careers in specific areas of advanced medical research. Concentrations include Bioethics, Ecology, Epidemiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Neuroscience and Public Health.  

The curricula for the combined MD/MSc degrees reflect areas of investigative research that enhance preventive medicine and healthcare delivery in Grenada, other Caribbean states and internationally. Medical students enrolled in the dual degree program decelerate their preclinical medical sciences to facilitate their MSc program.

Many of our graduate students have presented their work at international conferences; representing St. George's University in the larger community of research scientists. Research is partially supported by the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation, a non-profit organization at St. George's. Depending on the specific area of research, studies may be conducted either within WINDREF, in departmental laboratories, or in approved laboratories at other universities or institutes.

The MSc degree will be awarded on successful completion of 10 required credits from the preclinical MD program and all prescribed graduate level courses as outlined in the curriculum.

This program is offered to strong candidates who wish to combine the practice of medicine with a career as a clinical or basic sciences medical educator. The program is an integration of MD basic science coursework and additional graduate level courses.  

The MSc degree is awarded upon successful completion of basic sciences courses in the MD program and graduate level courses, as outlined in the curriculum. These include Seminar Attendance, Project Proposal Seminar, Written Project Proposal, Thesis, a Seminar on Project Outcome and Thesis Defense.

Master of Science (MSC) Programs

Both stand alone MSc and dual MD\MSc degree programs are available at St George’s University. All MSc options require 34 credits of graduate work comprising 19 credits of 900 and 15 credits of 800 level courses. A total of 12 credits of research are required with the outcome being the production of a thesis. Research and coursework is directed by the candidate’s Supervisory Committee. All completed theses upon the recommendation of the Chair of the Supervisory Committee are submitted to the Dean of the Graduate Studies Program and forwarded to an external examiner for independent evaluation. A final oral presentation and defense of the thesis must be successfully completed prior to the award of the degree.

MSc programs in Microbiology
There are two MSc options in Microbiology both of which are research based. One is designed as an option for those who have an interest in gaining entry into the MD program and the other is tailored for those candidates who would like to pursue a career in Microbiology. Both options have similar academic requirements and may follow specific areas of concentration in clinical microbiology, marine microbiology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, and virology. Graduate courses will complement the specific areas of concentration. If a candidate opts for the MD entry program, then 12 MD credits are included in this degree option. The required preclinical MD courses include Microbiology (5 credits), Biochemistry (6 credits) and Parasitology (1 credit). These credits will be carried forward into the MD program if the candidate successfully completes the requirements for entry into the MD program. Admission is secured by successfully completing all the requirements for the 18 month MSc with a GPA of 3.0.

MSc program in Clinical Anatomy and Education
This MSc degree is a two-year program that integrates the traditional anatomical sciences with current teaching methodologies.

Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) Programs

PhD programs at St. George’s University require a total of 60 credits comprising 36 credits of 800 level courses and 24 credits of 900 level courses. All PhD programs require the production and defense of a doctoral thesis. Transfer credits are accepted from approved institutions and the candidate’s Supervisory Committee determines the number of credits that may be incorporated, following departmental specified guidelines. Research and coursework is directed by the candidate’s Supervisory Committee. All completed theses upon the recommendation of the Chair of the Supervisory Committee are submitted to the Dean of the Graduate Studies Program and forwarded to an external examiner A final oral presentation and defense of the thesis must be successfully completed prior to the award of the degree.

PhD Program in Microbiology
The Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Microbiology offers specific areas of concentration in clinical microbiology, marine microbiology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, and virology. Graduate courses will complement the specific areas of concentration and are set by the candidate’s Supervisory Committee.

PhD program in Clinical Anatomy and Education
The PhD in Clinical Anatomy and Education provides academic anatomists with training in clinical and anatomical research as well as teaching methodology and practice.

Dual Degree MSC Programs

MD/MSc Dual Degree program

The research carried out in this dual degree program is partially supported by the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF), a non-profit organization at St. George’s University. Depending on the specific area of research, studies may be conducted within WINDREF, in departmental laboratories, or in approved laboratories at other universities or institutes.The MSc degree will be awarded on successful completion of 10 required credits from the preclinical MD program and all prescribed graduate level courses as outlined in the curriculum.

MD/MSc program in Clinical Anatomy and Education
This intensive program is specifically designed to enhance a student’s medical training with a strong component in the art of clinical anatomy and medical education. This program is offered to strong candidates who wish to combine the practice of medicine with a career as a clinical or basic sciences medical educator. The program is an integration of MD basic science coursework and additional graduate level courses.

PhD program in Clinical Anatomy and Education
This program prepares students with a breadth of clinical knowledge and the ability to design experiments and conduct anatomical and educational research within the modern and developing fields of clinical anatomy. The program is closely integrated with the basic science portion of the MD program.

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine/Master of Science dual degree program gives veterinary medical students the opportunity to conduct active and original bench and/or field research in anatomy, marine medicine, microbiology, morphological and clinical pathology, parasitology, pharmacology or wildlife medicine.

In this dual degree program students will complete the DVM degree requirements simultaneously with the MSc requirements. This entails spending the first two summers of the DVM program in Grenada in order to meet the course work requirements for the MSc program.

The MSc requires completion of 34 graduate credits as prescribed by the program. Under the supervision of an academic advisor and a supervisory committee, students prepare a research project proposal. Once approved, an ongoing research experience is conducted throughout the period of enrollment in the degree program. The program culminates with a final comprehensive oral examination and defense of the thesis.

The major selected determines the research area and graduate course work requirements for the completion of the program.

Opportunities for veterinarians with postgraduate training in public health are almost unlimited. Some US federal agencies with a variety of public health careers are: the US Public Health Services and its centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, the US Air Force and Army, and the US Department of Agriculture with its many varied programs. State, county and local departments of health provide hundreds more opportunities.

The DVM/MPH dual degree program incorporates course work from the Master of Public Health program into the School of Veterinary Medicine schedule. In this program, students take an additional 36 credits in MPH course work to acquire a firm foundation in public health in conjunction with the veterinary medical degree program. The program is a combination of didactic lectures, hands-on training, short-term practical internship in a public health–related organization and a capstone paper for written and oral presentation. Students enrolled in the dual degree program spend their first two summers and an additional six months in Grenada.
