Is there a selection process in choosing the participants?
There are no prerequisites for the Summer Academy; however, you must be at least 15 years old for the high school session and 18 years old for the college session. The seats in the academy are available on a first come, first serve basis. Students will be required to listen to lectures, work in labs, and complete medical and veterinary case studies; therefore we are seeking serious minded, motivated future doctors and veterinarians to participate.
What is the cost of the Academy?
The cost for the 10-day Academy, including all meals, accommodations, lectures and transportation in Grenada – is US $1,800.00 (excluding the optional scuba diving outing). Checks are to be made payable to University Support Services, LLC. We do not accept credit cards for any portion of tuition payment. Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements, (we will provide the name of our travel agent) however we will meet students at the airport and provide transportation to their living accommodations on campus. There will be a minimum of a $500.00 deposit to be sent in with the application in order to hold a seat in the academy. This deposit will hold your seat until March 1, 2008. The remaining balance of $1,300.00 is due April 15, 2008. This date is subject to change upon availability.
What does the tuition cost include?
The tuition includes accommodations, transport on the island, all meals, medical instruction, field trips, and the welcome and closing dinner.
If a student wishes to enroll in a scuba class, this can be arranged at the student’s expense. Certified divers will also have the opportunity to go diving.
Please note that tuition does not include spending money. Make sure you bring additional money for the 10 days that you will be in Grenada. It is advised to have traveler’s checks. Also, there is a departure tax of $25 U.S. to be paid at the airport when leaving Grenada.
When can I arrive for the start of the Academy?
If you need to arrive earlier or leave later, housing on campus cannot be
guaranteed.
How can I contact family or friends when I arrive in Grenada?
Upon arrival in Grenada, students will receive a complimentary phone card to allow them to call home and inform their family that they have arrived safely. Students will also have access to the internet in the library on campus. Family and friends will be provided with the blog address to view daily updates. Before arriving in Grenada, families will receive general contact and urgent contact information.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes. A full refund will be granted up until April 1, 2008. A 50% refund will be granted if cancelled before April 15, 2008, 25% refund if canceled prior to May 1, 2008. There will be no refund after May 1, 2008.
What do I need to travel to Grenada?
A valid passport and a letter from the University (which will be provided at a later date) should be sufficient in most cases to travel to and enter Grenada, but some students may require additional paperwork based on citizenship, we can advise you accordingly.
What do I need to bring to Grenada?
The climate will be summer like when you are in Grenada, so pack appropriate dress, including swim wear. High SPF sunscreen lotion is a must. Students do not need to bring their own bed linens and bath towels they will be supplied for you. There are laundry facilities available in the living accommodations. A detailed list will be included in the orientation package.
Where will I be living while in the Med/Vet Summer Academy ?
The students will be housed in one of our beautiful new dorms overlooking the Caribbean Sea on the True Blue campus. The accommodations have common kitchen and bath facilities, and are within walking distance of all the campus facilities.
Will I need to bring my computer or any other electronic devices?
It is not required or recommended to bring your computer with you. Students will have full access to the computer lab. The dorm rooms are equipped with 110 outlets. However, it is recommended to bring a strip outlet with surge protection if you anticipate charging any valuable devices, eg. digital camera or mp3 players.
Medical Insurance
Students are required to carry personal medical insurance. Check your carrier to be sure if coverage is in effect while in Grenada. Medical treatment will be accessed in a reasonable amount of time at the nearest facility. Payment for treatment or emergency transport is the responsibility of your insurance company or family. Students are required to bring proof of their insurance and contact information for their insurer, so that if they do need medical attention they can prove that they have insurance.
Will I receive academic credit?
In addition to a certificate of completion, effective 2008, qualifying participants will receive college credit through the School of Arts and Sciences from participating in lectures and clinical practicals.
