Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)

The Academic Enhancement Program is a support program implemented by the Demonstrators in the Department of Educational Services (DES) for students in their first year in the School of Medicine or School of Veterinary Medicine.

AEP is a retention and tutorial initiative that includes a needs assessment interview, supplemental instruction, and personal advising. Students are placed into the program for a variety of reasons that include being out of school for an extended period of time prior to beginning medical school. Students assigned to this program attend a program orientation upon arrival in Grenada and are scheduled for specific services that address needs based on an assessment interview.

AEP Orientation

This meeting takes place during the first week of class. Any questions about AEP will be addressed in detail at that time. Information about the date, time and location of the meeting will be provided at the Freshman Convocation. There will also be flyers posted around campus with information about the Orientation Meeting. Information is also available through the Department of Educational Services.

Needs Assessment Interview

This initiative includes a needs assessment interview, regular personal advising, participation in review groups and opportunities to enhance test-taking and study skills. The purpose of the Needs' Assessment Interview is to identify and proactively address possible problems a student may encounter during his/her course of study. Some concerns often addressed include difficulties with question comprehension, time management, multiple-choice tests, study skills, test-taking anxiety, etc.

AEP Advisor Meeting

AEP students must meet with members of the Department of Educational Services after midterm examinations, and at any other point deemed necessary.

Group Review Attendance

Students must attend a minimum of three review groups, which are open to all students.

Group Review Sessions

DES Group Review Sessions and individual tutor sessions provide supplemental instruction for all students. Attendance at the Group Review Sessions is mandatory for students enrolled in the AEP program; for all other students, attendance is optional. DES offers over 80 group review sessions a week, and over 3000 group review sessions a term.

Individual Tutoring

Individual tutors are appointed to students on an “as needed” basis by full-time faculty in the Department of Educational Services.

The Demonstrators’ office recruits and selects individual tutors. All tutors employed by DES must have completed the course at SGU with an A or B grade, and have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Review Questions

The Demonstrators are responsible for organizing, updating, compiling and distributing weekly review questions for all medical school and veterinary school courses. These questions, which are written and reviewed by the course directors, serve as an additional form of supplemental study materials. The questions are also available on the DES quickplace.

The Department of Educational Service has been created to support students in their academic endeavors at SGU. Please come in to the office and see us if you have any questions or concerns. In short, we are here to help students succeed!
