Dr. John S. McKibben received a DVM from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1963 and a PhD from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, in 1969. He was a professor at Iowa State and Auburn universities before entering private practice in 1975. Dr. McKibben practiced veterinary medicine for over 25 years as Owner/Director and Practitioner at Sylvan Lake Veterinary Hospital in Rome City, IN. He became affiliated with St. George’s University as a visiting professor in 2000, Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 2004-2006 and is currently a professor at the SGU Small Animal Hospital.
Dr. McKibben is interested in studying aquatic and exotic animals in Grenada and also has a history of conducting research primarily in cardiac innervation, parrots, turtles, coral implants, Ehrlichia and associated diseases of dogs, Shar Pei dogs, intestinal parasites, demodex, and veterinary education. Dr. McKibben currently is facilitating the SGU Aquatic and Exotic Animal Medicine Research Groups.
He is the recipient of the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2000 the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, in recognition of services to academic veterinary medicine, veterinary research, veterinary practice, community service, and organized veterinary medicine.
