Affiliated Hospitals and Clinical Centers St. George’s University School of Medicine has a long standing relationship with many excellent affiliated hospitals.
In 1999, the University inaugurated a system of clinical centers to add to its already impressive list of affiliated hospitals.
A clinical center is defined as a hospital, or group of hospitals, able to provide at least four or five core rotations and train 80 to 100 students at all times. Clinical centers provide sub-internships, primary care rotations and electives.
With SGU clinical directors, clerkship directors and faculty at each location, our students, like many US medical students, can receive their clinical education in their own “university” clinical program.
The University will provide students, at the time of hospital placement confirmation, with the most current supporting documentation necessary to facilitate the pertinent visa application process. SGU students should not apply for a visa for the purpose of clinical training in the US or the UK without first following guidelines issued by the Clinical Department and securing the appropriate supporting documentation from the University.

The Hospital: Woodhull is a leader in the fight against childhood asthma, which disproportionately affects young Brooklynites. Recently, Woodhull's highly-regarded Asthma program was awarded $900,000 over five years to partner with local schools and the North Brooklyn Asthma Action Alliance to introduce ways for children with asthma to manage this debilitating disease. Already the Pediatric Asthma program's effective, patient-centered approach has paid off. The program, which documents the stabilization of a patient's asthma prior to discharge from either the emergency room or as an inpatient, has shown a significant drop in return visits to Woodhull. Designated by New York State as an AIDS Center, Woodhull's Paul Poroski Family Center provides comprehensive care to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Making health education a top priority, Woodhull promotes community awareness of HIV/AIDS through extensive outreach and education. Other specialty services include the Women's Health Initiative Program, which makes available extensive obstetrical and gynecological services, including free walk-in pregnancy testing, family planning and pre- and post-natal care. Woodhull is particularly concerned with reaching vulnerable populations, such as adolescents and high-risk pregnant mothers. Woodhull also is home to a Diabetic Case Management program. This nurse-managed service is interdisciplinary, with an emphasis on helping diabetic patients manage their illness. The program dispenses information about the disease, proper nutrition and exercise, stress reduction and health maintenance. Woodhull believes that patients deserve the best service possible, and has reduced waiting time in clinics and made it easier to schedule an appointment. In addition, a specially-trained nurse is available by telephone 24 hours-a-day, 7 days a week to respond to questions regarding healthcare. |

The Hospital:Saint Mary's Hospital has played a vital role in the history of Greater Waterbury, providing nearly a century of service to the people of the Central Naugatuck Valley. Founded in 1907 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambery, Saint Mary's has been a beacon of healing and hope for more than 90 years. The hospital's earliest benefactor was the Right Reverend Monsignor William J. Slocum, permanent rector of Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury. He made an early contribution of $20,000 to get the project off the ground. A reminder of just how generous a gift that was for the time comes from the fact that the entire debt for Saint Mary's Hospital, after its first 22 months of operation, was just $111,000. From its earliest days, Saint Mary's has enjoyed tremendous support in the community. More than 400 women formed the Ladies Aid Society before the hospital was even dedicated. A crowd in excess of 20,000 thronged Union Square in September 1907 to lay the Hospital cornerstone. Two years later, Saint Mary's was formally dedicated; the new health center boasted a staff of 14 including seven Sisters. Today, about 1,800 of your neighbors and friends are hard at work caring for you, your family and your community. The hospital continues to expand its network of services, forging alliances with other key health care providers, and exploring new ways to comfort and cure. *Information taken from www.stmh.org is printed with permission of St Mary’s Hospital.
