The next generation of veterinarians took an important step toward their future careers, as St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine hosted its Fall 2026 White Coat Ceremony at Patrick F. Adams Hall, on September 19. Family support, lifelong dreams, and a shared passion for animal care were at the heart of the ceremony, when students recited the Oath of Professionalism and prepared themselves for the journey ahead.

Following in a father’s footsteps
Veterinary medicine has been part of William Burkey’s life for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Richmond, VA, he spent much of his childhood in his father’s veterinary clinic, where early exposure to the profession sparked a lifelong interest in animal care. Now an SGU veterinary medical student, William had the privilege of being coated by his father, Dr. Carter Burkey, who has practiced veterinary medicine for 38 years.
“Veterinary medicine has been all I’ve ever wanted to do,” William said. “I grew up in my dad’s clinic watching him work, so it’s all I’ve ever known. And now that I’m finally here, it feels surreal, but only in the best way.”

For Dr. Burkey, participating in the ceremony was especially meaningful, having now coated both of his sons as they began their veterinary medical education.
“We’re very proud of Will and we love him very much,” Dr. Burkey said. “Having the opportunity to coat both of my sons during such an important moment in their journey is something few parents get to experience.”
A lifelong dream realized
Ria Adams from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was raised around animals on her grandparents’ farm. Ria always knew she wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. Receiving her white coat represented the beginning of a journey she had envisioned since childhood. The occasion was made even more meaningful by the presence of her extended family, who traveled to celebrate alongside her.

“I feel like I have just achieved a huge milestone in my life, my white coat is just the start of my journey, and I can’t wait to continue,” Ria said “This achievement isn’t mine alone. My family has been with me every step of the way, supporting me and seeing how hard I’ve worked, which makes it even more special to have them here celebrating this moment with me.”
Ria chose SGU because of the vibrant campus community she had long admired. The University’s Caribbean setting also allowed her to remain close to home while pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian, making the transition to university life feel both familiar and welcoming.
Embracing new opportunities
For Elizabeth Campanella, the White Coat Ceremony marked the culmination of years of preparation and the start of an exciting new chapter. Originally from upstate New York, Elizabeth came to Grenada after earning her undergraduate degree in animal science and biotechnology. Attending SGU also marked her first experience living outside the United States.

“Receiving my white coat is really exciting,” Elizabeth said. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, and it’s amazing to finally reach this point. I’m excited to keep learning, grow as a veterinarian, and one day use that knowledge to help both animals and the people who care for them.”
Elizabeth’s passion for veterinary medicine extends beyond caring for animals. Her goal is to use her knowledge to educate pet owners and support communities while exploring interests in small and exotic animals, emergency, and critical care medicine.
