HEADS UP! This one`s for the kids
.... Specifically those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This week I put away my scrubs and raised my voice advocating for change. I had the honor of going to the Capitol and meeting with individuals of the US Congress.
The HEADS UP Act is the Healthcare Extension and Accessibility for Developmental Disabled and Underserved Populations Act. It aims to officially designate those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as a medically underserved population.
-It would increase access for individuals with IDD to more than 25 federal programs and agencies.
- Recruit more providers who serve those with IDD by increasing access to loan repayment and training programs for those working in this area.
- Increase research focus due to federal research priority in studying medically underserved populations.

More than 2.5 million individuals with IDD have specialized medical care.
More than 1.5 million people with IDD have specialized dental care.
The wait list to see providers is anywhere between 1-3 years. We understand this is a crisis. We are frustrated for you. We are here calling for change to provide people with IDD with a future that sets them up for success.
