Mauricio Seguel, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Associate Professor

Dr. Seguel is a wildlife pathologist and immunologist whose research focuses on the impacts of environmental variation on immune development and infection dynamics in animals. He earned his veterinary medicine degree from Universidad Austral de Chile in 2010 and completed a residency in veterinary anatomic pathology at the University of Georgia, USA, in 2015, becoming a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

From 2014 to 2017, Dr. Seguel conducted field experiments on Guafo Island, Chile, as part of his doctoral research in biomedical sciences at the University of Georgia. His work explored the environmental and immunological factors influencing hookworm disease in fur seals. In 2018, he joined Dr. Vanessa Ezenwa’s laboratory at the Odum School of Ecology, where he developed immunological tools to study co-infection dynamics in African buffalo.

Currently, Dr. Seguel’s lab investigates the causes and consequences of immune variation across various mammal species. His projects include leading a two-decade-long research program on wildlife disease ecology at Guafo Island, located in Chilean Patagonia, and collaborating with research groups across North America, South America, and Africa.

Before joining SGU, Dr. Seguel was an assistant professor in the Pathobiology Department at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada. There, he provided pathology diagnostic services to the teaching hospital and the Toronto Zoo.
