Stephen Weitzman

Stephen Weitzman, MD

Dean Emeritus, School of Medicine

Dr. Weitzman was appointed Dean Emeritus, School of Medicine, in 2021. Prior to that, he held the position of Dean of the School of Medicine since 2004. He has been with SGU since 1978, first as a visiting professor and then as the Chair of the Department of Medicine from 1981 to 2001 and Dean of Clinical Studies from 1981 to 2004. Before his involvement with SGU, Dr. Weitzman taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine from 1975 to 1980 in their Departments of Medicine and Microbiology. He also serves as an Infectious Disease Consultant at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Patchogue, NY, a position he has held since 1981.

Dr. Weitzman received his Bachelor of Arts degree in German literature and language from Kenyon College in Ohio, graduating magna cum laude, and his MD from New York University School of Medicine. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency and an infectious disease fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
