Bio
Dr. Nyoni Winchester is a livestock veterinarian, educator, and veterinary public health advocate at St. George’s University, Grenada. She is passionate about developing future veterinarians through clinical skills, livestock production, reproduction, and nutrition, while supporting farmers through practical herd health and outreach services. Her work is grounded in a One Health approach, with a growing focus on climate resilience, sustainable livestock production, and regional food security.
Dr. Winchester obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies (2015). She also obtained her Master’s in Veterinary Studies (MVS) degree from Massey University (2019). At present, she is pursuing a Master’s in Public Health (MPH), Global Health Track, at SGU, to be completed in 2025.
In her early career, Dr. Winchester held the position Veterinary Officer within the Animal Health Unit of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) (2015). Subsequently, Dr. Winchester was appointed the Veterinary Scientist with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Officer in charge of the Tobago Unit (2017).
Dr. Winchester is a Climate Change and Health (CCH) Leaders Fellow (2024) where she hosted Grenada’s First Symposium for Heat Threshold Development. She is passionate about advocating for climate action and advancing awareness of how climate change affects animal and human health, livestock production, and regional food security. Her work is driven by a commitment to building resilient, sustainable, and healthier communities across the region.
Dr. Winchester is a Veterinary Consultant, currently involved in the researching the impact of heat stress on small ruminants and poultry. The expected outcome is the development of sustainable agriculture practices which improves livestock production in the region with the aim of reducing imports.
Dr. Winchester is SGU Large Animal Representative for the CaribVET Secretariat. She is current the PRO for the Caribbean Veterinary Medical Association (CbVMA). In addition, she is an Earthmedic Associate.
Dr. Winchester originates from the island Tobago of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. She is a devote Anglican. Her enthusiasm for nature, her love for hiking and diverse cultural experiences gained from travelling has heavily influenced her aspirations.
Professional Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is grounded in inspiring curiosity, building confidence, and fostering a lifelong respect for all aspects of veterinary medicine. I strive to emulate the best qualities of the teachers and colleagues who have inspired me, while continuously challenging myself to grow and improve. Having spent much of my life as a dedicated student, I deeply value the privilege of now being able to share knowledge and help shape the next generation of veterinarians, whom I affectionately call my “Vetlings.” I approach this responsibility with great seriousness and pride, knowing that each interaction contributes to their growth, confidence, and professional identity, qualities essential for success in veterinary medicine and beyond.
