SGU President Dr. Marios Loukas Awarded Honorary Doctor of Science from Northumbria University

Dr. Marios Loukas, SGU president and dean of the School of Medicine receives Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Northumbria University News

St. George’s University president and dean of the School of Medicine Dr. Marios Loukas was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Northumbria University (NU), in recognition of his visionary leadership in global medical education and his pivotal role in expanding SGU’s international impact.

“Northumbria University has been a trusted partner in this work, and I am proud to be connected with such an esteemed institution that shares an unwavering commitment to global health, education, and social impact.” —Dr. Marios Loukas

The award not only celebrates Dr. Loukas’ individual achievements but also reflects the growing global significance of SGU’s mission to tackle the critical shortage of physicians worldwide. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing SGU’s academic excellence, forging strategic international partnerships, and expanding access to high-quality medical education for students across the globe.

The distinction places him among notable honorees, including Baroness Howells of St Davids, OBE and SGU Chancellor Charles Modica.

During the ceremony, Dr. Loukas expressed his deep appreciation for the recognition and highlighted the importance of the collaboration between SGU and NU, one that has helped prepare hundreds of aspiring physicians for successful careers around the world.

“It is a privilege and an honor to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Northumbria University, especially given the strong partnership between our institutions,” said Dr. Loukas. “Together, SGU and Northumbria have expanded opportunities for aspiring physicians and contributed to addressing the global doctor shortage.”

The SGU/NU program has served as a model for academic cooperation, giving students access to high-quality education and a strong foundation for medical training. Many graduates who began their studies at NU are now practicing in the National Health Service (NHS), the United States, and health systems across the globe.

Dr. Loukas emphasized that the recognition reflects the shared mission of both universities: “Northumbria University has been a trusted partner in this work, and I am proud to be connected with such an esteemed institution that shares an unwavering commitment to global health, education, and social impact.”

The honorary degree celebrates not only Dr. Loukas’ contributions to SGU but also the collective accomplishments of a partnership that continues to shape the future of the healthcare workforce.
