As students prepare to apply to medical school, it is important to understand the academic prerequisites, particularly GPA requirements. St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, has put together some insights into how undergraduate academic performance impacts your application.
According to the Princeton Review, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or more is the standard mark for getting into an MD program. However, the Average GPA for accepted applicants in 2022–2023 was a 3.75 overall.
More than just GPA
At SGU, the evaluation of an applicant’s academic readiness extends beyond mere GPA calculations. While a strong GPA is undeniably important, many universities will look deeper into the context of those grades.
Other factors that are considered are the rigor of your undergraduate coursework, the competitiveness of the school you attended, and the relevance of your chosen courses to the medical field. A balanced academic record with coursework in biology, chemistry, and physics is often seen as a strong foundation for medical training.
Moreover, SGU recognizes that a GPA is not the sole indicator of an applicant’s potential to succeed in medical school. For students with lower GPAs, SGU offers other tracks to demonstrate their readiness for medical school.
