    Sports and Recreation

SGU offers a wide range of activities to help keep the body and mind healthy.

    Thick Curve
Fitness, sports, wellness and recreation are an essential part of St. George’s University and campus life. Students take full advantage of the tropical climate, participating in outdoor activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving in their free time. In addition, the Fitness and Wellness Center has created a healthy atmosphere for students to exercise their minds and bodies.

Located on the first floor of the Andrew J. Belford Centre, SGU’s multi-purpose Fitness & Wellness Center houses weight-training and cardio equipment, space for fitness classes such as spinning and yoga and locker rooms.

The facility is open to all current students, staff, and faculty. To enter, gym users must scan their SGU ID to access the facility and keep their ID with them at all times.

The staff at the Gym is assisted by work-study students during the early and late shifts, as well as on weekends. All staff members are easily identified by their SGU Athletic Staff T-shirts if you are in need of assistance.

The Athletics, Sports and Recreational Department Notice Boards at the entrance to the Gym display its rules and guidelines and any other relevant authorized notices and advertisements.

In addition to on-campus gym facilities, students receive a special rate to train at Body Image Health Club, located in Excel Plaza in nearby Grand Anse.

    Intramural Sports
The intramural sports program continues to grow and provide numerous athletic opportunities for the SGU community. The University schedules weekly contests over a 10-week span each semester, including in soccer, basketball, volleyball, and flag football. Frisbee, cricket, street hockey, and softball are among the activities held on the field and court adjacent to the gym facilities.

    University Teams
University teams have been competitive in Grenada and in the region. Although there are no official varsity teams, SGU has in the past sponsored teams in inter-island competitions for soccer, cricket, netball, and basketball. These teams are coordinated and organized by interested students, staff, and significant others.

There are numerous ways to work up a sweat, to unwind, to reset, or to otherwise put yourself in the right state of mind to excel in your studies. That can be accomplished individually or through the numerous fitness classes organized in the SGU gym. They range from aerobics and kickboxing to dance, martial arts, and yoga. Many classes are also held outdoors, including on the second floor of Modica Hall, at which you can peer out toward the Caribbean Sea, or on the beach. The playing field on lower campus is outfitted for recreational CrossFit training and jogging/running.
