Bio
Dr. Loukas earned his MD from Warsaw University School of Medicine and a PhD in pathology from the Institute of Rheumatology in Warsaw, Poland. He completed postdoctoral research at Ulm University Clinic in Germany, where he focused on arteriogenesis and angiogenesis. His academic career began at Harvard Medical School, where he served as a lecturer and laboratory instructor for the Human Body Course.
In 2005, he joined St. George’s University (SGU) and rose rapidly to Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomical Sciences. By 2008, he also became Assistant Dean of Basic and Allied Health Sciences, establishing pioneering divisions in Ultrasound in Medical Education and Biomedical Visualization. In 2012, he was appointed Dean of Research, strengthening SGU’s transdisciplinary research infrastructure and fostering translational collaboration between basic science and clinical departments.
Dr. Loukas later served as President of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists and as Vice Chair of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions. In 2021, he became Dean of the School of Medicine.
With over 900 peer-reviewed publications and 25 books—including Gray’s Anatomy Review and McMinn and Abrahams’ Clinical Atlas—he is recognized as one of the most prolific anatomists worldwide. He holds an additional academic appointment at the Mayo Clinic, and in 2025 received two Honorary Doctorates. In 2025, he became the President of SGU.
Professional Philosophy
Dr. Loukas believes in developing future physicians through inquiry, compassion, and hands-on learning. He encourages students to approach medicine with curiosity and integrity, blending scientific rigor with human connection to prepare them to lead in diverse global healthcare settings.
