SGU Enhances Campus Facilities with Major Upgrades for Fall 2025

campus upgrades to the Charles Modica campus News

Over the summer, St. George’s University has been hard at work enhancing its campus with a range of new improvements. This fall, students, faculty, and staff will return to campus upgrades designed to enrich both academic pursuits and campus life.

“As we continue to grow and evolve, these projects reflect our ongoing investment in the success, safety, and well-being of our students,” said Dr. Marios Loukas, president of SGU and dean of the School of Medicine. “Every enhancement we make is guided by our commitment to creating the best possible environment for academic excellence and personal growth.”

Earlier this year, SGU named its Grenada campus in honor of Chancellor Charles Modica, one of the University’s co-founders. As the University approaches its 50th anniversary, the Modica Campus remains committed to creating a rich, dynamic learning environment to best prepare the next generations of doctors and veterinarians.

“These renovations reflect our commitment to continually raising the standard of veterinary and medical education at SGU,” said Christina Verderosa, SGU’s director of operations. “By expanding our facilities and incorporating advanced technology, we are not only enhancing the student learning experience today but also preparing our graduates to thrive in tomorrow’s professional environments.”

Here are some of the new upgrades and improvements students, faculty, and staff will benefit from this term.

    Campus upgrades

Upgraded Small Animal Clinic ICU, cat ward, and kennel treatment room

    Small Animal Clinic transformation

The Small Animal Clinic has undergone a full-scale renovation, doubling its surgical capacity with the addition of a new orthopedic operating room and a fully equipped dental surgical suite. Dedicated medical equipment rooms for instruments, ultrasound, x-ray, and sterilization now provide students with access to modern clinical tools in a professional setting that mirrors real-world practice.

The upgrades also include expanded and improved spaces for the ICU, cat ward, and kennel treatment room, as well as the addition of a brand-new exotics area to support a wider range of learning opportunities.

To enhance the learning environment even further, students, faculty, and staff can now enjoy:

    • more than 50 new student lockers,
    • a redesigned diagnostics and case documentation area, and
    • fresh, modern furniture and fixtures.

Ensuring reliability, a new generator was also installed to provide backup electricity for the clinic and surrounding veterinary buildings.

    Belford Hall new sprinkler system

    Safety and security enhancement

Safety remains a top priority at SGU, with major projects completed this summer to improve campus infrastructure. A new fire sprinkler system has been installed throughout Belford Hall, part of the University’s ongoing effort to upgrade all high-density buildings.

In addition, Morris Alpert Hall now features a brand-new elevator. Work to replace the building’s second elevator is already underway and scheduled for completion in December.

Student parking lot, new concrete driveway now connects the main road to the lot

    Student parking lot improvements

Responding to student feedback, SGU has launched a major project to improve the student parking lot. The first phase, already completed, added a new concrete driveway to provide a smoother, more durable entry point from the main road.

Construction to complete these campus upgrades will continue throughout the term, addressing flooding, uneven ground, and accessibility to make the lot safer, more functional, and better suited to students’ needs.
