    Biography

Dr. Andy Alhassan is a Professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine. He teaches Bacteriology, Mycology, and a graduate-level course in Molecular Biology. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he serves as the Director of the Bacteriology/Mycology and Molecular Biology Diagnostic Services.

Dr. Andy Alhassan has mentored MSc, PhD, and DVM students in research, fostering the next generation of scientists and veterinary professionals. Prior to joining SGU, he worked as a Research Associate Scientist at the Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Diseases (CEVBD) at Kansas State University (KSU). He was also a recipient of the Postdoctoral Scholars Program (PSP) fellowship offered by the School of Veterinary Medicine, SGU. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at New England Biolabs (NEB), Massachusetts, where he focused on developing and evaluating diagnostic assays for neglected tropical diseases.

Dr. Alhassan’s research interests center around vector-borne diseases and the development of molecular-based diagnostic tools for pathogens of veterinary and medical significance. Dr. Alhassan’s focuses on the development and refinement of molecular diagnostic assays for the detection and characterization of zoonotic, foodborne, and animal pathogens, as well as antimicrobial resistance within food-producing animal systems.

He is deeply committed to advancing research, training, and capacity building, with a strong emphasis on collaborative, cross-disciplinary initiatives. As a passionate advocate of the One Health approach, Dr. Alhassan recognizes its critical role in addressing the global challenges posed by infectious diseases.

Dr. Alhassan has authored numerous scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
