Every year, medical students from around the world choose St. George’s University School of Medicine to begin their journey toward becoming doctors. The students who joined in the 2025 academic year (those who started in one of SGU’s three term starts of August 2024, January 2025, and April 2025) are no exception. This diverse and accomplished group of med students brings with them a wide range of experiences, backgrounds, and dreams.
So who attends SGU? Here are four highlights from SGU’s student demographics.
1. Most US students came from 1 of these 5 states
While SGU attracts students from across the US—40 states and the District of Columbia to be exact—five states stood out as the most represented: California, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Texas.
Together, these states accounted for over 60 percent of SGU’s US students. This shows just how popular SGU is with aspiring doctors from major population centers across the country.
2. This class is globally diverse
SGU continues to underscore its position as a truly international institution. Medical students in the 2025 incoming class hail from 39 countries.
Outside of the US and Canada, notable regions include Latin America and the Caribbean (30 percent), Africa (23 percent), and the Middle East (22 percent). Top international countries represented include Grenada, the United Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, and Botswana.
3. Students from all ages are pursuing their dreams
There’s no “right” time to start medical school and SGU’s newest class proves it.
The age range of this class spans from 18 to 64, with about 9 percent of students over the age of 30. Whether fresh out of undergrad or pursuing medicine as a second career, SGU welcomes students from all walks of life.
4. Our students bring a wealth of knowledge in all areas
Biology and health sciences are well-represented among incoming students, but SGU’s new class also includes those with backgrounds in psychology, engineering, fine arts, and even finance.
Additionally, more than 21 percent of students, or about 1 in 5, have already earned advanced degrees, including master’s and doctoral-level education. With majors ranging from neuroscience to international relations, this highly educated class brings a variety of academic strengths that will enhance classroom learning and clinical training alike.
