In a bold step toward addressing the critical physician shortage, St. George’s University and the University of Waterloo have partnered to launch a transformative academic students a streamlined track from high school to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
A Guaranteed Path to Medical School
Program
The St. George’s University + University of Waterloo Five- and Six-Year Doctor of Medicine Tracks offer a direct and globally respected path to a medical degree.
Students earn a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSci) from UW and an MD from SGU.

University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada)
Foundational preclinical sciences, academic support and experiential learning—delivered close to home.
MD Year 1 takes place at SGU’s Grenada campus or in the UK through SGU’s partnership with Northumbria University. Medical sciences curriculum and clinical training available in US, UK and Canada (elective rotations only).

Choose Your Track – Placement Based on Your Academic Background
Once accepted to the St. George’s University and University of Waterloo Doctor of Medicine Track, your seat in medical school is saved—no reapplication, no retesting. You can apply directly from high school or after first-year university.
Applicants are considered for either a 5-Year or 6-Year Doctor of Medicine track based on a holistic review of their academic credentials and other factors. Final placement into a specific track is determined at the discretion of the St. George’s University Faculty Student Selection Committee.

- Depth of exposure to science courses and strength of academic performance
- Overall readiness for the accelerated pace of study

Admission Requirements
The admission requirements listed below are intended as general guidelines to illustrate the typical academic background and credentials considered for each track. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance, nor are they exhaustive of all possible pathways to admission. Final decisions, including track placement, are made by the SGU Student Faculty Selection Committee based on a comprehensive review of each applicant’s academic history, personal attributes, and overall preparedness.
5-Year MD Track Requirements
- Advanced Levels: Minimum 3 subjects with A’s and B’s in Biology, Chemistry, and either Math or Physics; Math or Physics can be accepted at AS level with strong non-science third A level.
- Full IB Diploma: Requires a minimum score of 32 points; 3 Higher Level science subjects recommended; minimum of 2 Higher Level subjects required, which must include Chemistry and Biology; results 5 or higher.
- CEGEP Diploma: 3 GPA overall and in relevant sciences
- Associate’s Degree: All MD science pre-requisites met
6-Year MD Track Requirements
- Secondary school diploma: Strong performance in secondary school science courses
- 1 Year University Completed with Some MD science pre-requisites met
- Associates Degree: Some MD science pre-requisites met
Curriculum
Program Goals and Design
The proposed BMSci + M.D. program is designed to:
- Equip students with foundational scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills in biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and physics.
- Integrate communication, research literacy, and an understanding of social determinants of health to prepare students for modern medical practice.
- Provide an accelerated, globally connected route to a medical degree—2+4 (6-year) or 1+4 (5-year)—compared to the traditional 4+4 Canadian model.
- Enhance students’ readiness for Canadian residency opportunities, with tailored mentorship and academic coaching throughout.

Scholarships and Tuition

U.S. federal student aid is available to Title IV-eligible students for the MD portion of the program, provided all basic science years are completed in Grenada.

Degree Outcomes

All students will complete the final two years of the BMSci program at St. George’s University where advanced medical sciences coursework is delivered alongside early clinical exposure.

The University of Waterloo is now accepting applications for the proposed SGU/UW Doctor of Medicine (MD) Track program. Processing of these applications and admission of students will not occur until the program is approved by the Ontario Universities Council on Quality Assurance (Quality Council). The University will acknowledge and store applications but will be unable to evaluate or act on them in any way until the program has been formally approved by the Quality Council.
