More than 100 students are taking their first steps toward a career in medicine through a groundbreaking partnership between St. George’s University (SGU) and the University of Waterloo. A welcome event held on October 22 at the University of Waterloo Faculty of Science in Ontario, Canada, marked an exciting milestone in the first-of-its-kind pathway in Canada, which aims to expand access to medical education and help address the country’s physician shortage.
By combining Waterloo’s strengths in science and research with SGU’s expertise in medical education, the partnership offers Canadian students a streamlined pathway from high school to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. This innovative model reflects how leading institutions can work across traditional boundaries to create new opportunities for aspiring physicians and help meet the evolving needs of healthcare.
“This partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in addressing one of healthcare’s most pressing challenges,” said Dr. Marios Loukas, SGU president and dean of the School of Medicine. “By combining our institutions’ strengths, we are creating opportunities for talented students to pursue medical careers through a more direct pathway, while helping prepare the next generation of physicians Canada and the world need. This is what innovation in medical education looks like: working together to expand access, develop future physicians and healthcare leaders, and make a lasting difference in the communities they will serve.”
A streamlined pathway to medicine
The pathway offers 5- and 6-year MD tracks, enabling students to progress from high school through undergraduate study at the University of Waterloo and into medical training at SGU. Students earn a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree from Waterloo before continuing to SGU’s MD program.
Academic and career advising, along with a streamlined admissions process, provides students with structured support as they navigate their journey toward becoming physicians.
Preparing future physicians for Canada and beyond
The partnership comes at a time when access to primary care remains a significant challenge across Canada. More than six million Canadians lack access to a family physician, underscoring the need for new approaches to preparing more physicians to serve communities in need.
With more than 2,100 Canadian alumni, SGU has an established connection to Canada’s healthcare workforce. Through this collaboration, SGU and Waterloo aim to expand opportunities for aspiring physicians and help prepare the next generation of medical professionals to serve in Canada and around the world.
