In an article published by Education Post, Gaurov Dayal, MD, CEO of the parent company of St. George’s University, examined how medical training must evolve around AI literacy, clinical reasoning, assessment, governance, and patient safety.
While AI can help generate diagnoses and identify potential treatment considerations, he emphasized that technology should enhance, not replace, a doctor’s clinical reasoning and accountability.
“AI can support a decision; it cannot own one,” Dr. Dayal said. “A physician’s name goes on the chart, and their professional responsibility remains with them. That accountability cannot be delegated to software, regardless of how sophisticated it is.”
This perspective comes as healthcare systems worldwide face growing workforce challenges, with experts increasingly looking to innovation and physician training as key components of the solution.
