Yavani Choudree from Durban, South Africa, has been awarded a Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarship by St. George’s University on the Caribbean island of Grenada. A graduate of Crawford College La Lucia in Durban, South Africa and the University of Technology in Mauritius, Ms. Choudree’s scholarship will cover her full tuition fees and enable her to pursue a Doctor of Medicine degree.
This is one of 60 Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarships to be awarded by St George’s University in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 – marking her 60th year as the Head of the Commonwealth of Nations. The scholarship program was launched by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, in 2013 and a special message from the Queen was received in support.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for me,” says Ms. Choudree. “When I return to South Africa as a health care professional, my concentration will be on primary health care, particularly maternal and child health, and research into the diseases that impact so heavily on the statistics of maternal and neonatal deaths in South Africa.”
