  • Journey to become an MD: Steps to becoming a doctor
  •

Paying for medical school can feel overwhelming, but with the right planning and support, it’s a manageable and worthwhile investment in your future. St. George’s University (SGU) offers guidance, scholarships, and financial resources to help make the path to becoming a doctor more accessible.

    Financial planning

Effective financial planning is the first step toward managing the cost of medical school with confidence. Understanding how much it costs to apply to medical school, like application fees, can help you budget early and avoid surprises later in the process.

It’s also important to know what to ask. These key questions for financial aid officers can clarify your options and responsibilities.

    Medical school cost overview

Understanding the full cost of medical school goes beyond tuition and fees—it also includes expenses like housing, transportation, and study materials. Taking all of these factors into account can help you create a realistic budget and plan for the financial commitment ahead.

    Tuition and fees

Tuition and fees make up the core of your medical school expenses, so it’s important to understand what they include and how they’re structured. You can start by reviewing SGU’s Tuition, Fees, and Financial Planning homepage for an overview of current rates and available support.

For a detailed look, explore the cost breakdown of tuition and administrative fees. Also, don’t forget to factor in non-tuition expenses such as books, equipment, and living essentials. To see the overall cost, review SGU’s total cost of attendance for the 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-year MD programs.

    Cost considerations

When evaluating the cost of medical school, it’s important to look beyond the price tag and consider the long-term value of your investment. Factors like curriculum quality, clinical experience, and career outcomes all influence your return on investment. Be sure to evaluate these six things to consider when weighing the cost of SGU tuition to help you assess value more clearly.

While affordability matters, cost alone shouldn’t be the deciding factor. The value of an SGU education lies in the strength of its training, global clinical opportunities, and success in residency placement.

    Scholarships

At SGU, scholarships help you focus on what matters most—your journey to becoming a doctor. More than $88M in SGU scholarships were granted to entering MD students in the 2024-25 academic year, with all accepted applicants automatically considered for personalized awards.1
