    SGU Match Day 2023: How the numbers stack up

    2023 Match Day

    The journey from medical school student to earning your MD is a multi-year marathon that culminates with a memorable event: securing a residency position on Match Day.

    In order to practice as a licensed physician, obtaining a residency is critical to furthering your hands-on training. Medical students await with anticipation for Match Day, which takes place on the third Friday in March each year.

    What is Match Day?

    On Match Day, where you will further your training for the next three years. It’s completed using the National Resident Matching Program’s (NRMP) Main Residency Match. The algorithm will match applications with one of their preferred residency positions at a program that also prefers them. Here is a breakdown of how the residency match process works.

    “It still feels unreal that I matched because it has been an emotional rollercoaster throughout this journey, but I can’t help but smile when I think about it,” says Jaclynn Do, MD ’23, a first-year resident at Zucker School of Medicine / Northwell South Shore University Hospital, who is completing a preliminary surgery year.

    “Match Day (was) an unforgettable day,” says John Crane, MD ‘23, who recently started his residency in psychiatry at Mount Sinai Elmhurst in Queens, NY. “I am truly humbled and honored to match into my number one residency program.

    “As a psychiatrist, I look forward to helping patients improve their mental health,” he adds. “I am eager to work with underserved and disenfranchised populations. Mount Sinai Elmhurst will teach me to provide excellent psychiatric care.”

    Number of specialties: St. George’s University graduates obtained residency positions in several highly competitive specialties, ranging from surgery and neurology to emergency medicine and pediatrics. Overall, SGU students secured residency positions in more than 20 specialties. (2)
    “Being in a field such as radiology gives me endless opportunities for innovative research and global health outreach—both of which I’m interested in doing during my residency,” says Nanditha Guruvaiah Sridhara, MD ’23, a diagnostic radiology intern at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. “I also hope to encourage and support more women who are aiming to pursue the more competitive and male-dominated fields.”

    “When I opened my email, I couldn’t believe I matched at a UC program! I entered a field that is severely lacking Latino doctors, and now I have an opportunity to give back to my community,” says Joshua Fernandez, MD ‘23, a first-year neurology resident at University of California Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, CA. “I was over the moon with all these emotions after four years of hard work. It was all worth it. I am so grateful that I have an opportunity to represent SGU and all the international medical graduates that will follow me because my journey is proof that anything is possible.”
