Student support is at the core of the St. George’s University mission. The University offers a wide range of services that ensure that the University is in partnership with each student during his or her academic journey. In fact, more than 98 percent of students take advantage of the academic and non-academic assistance the University makes available.

From orientation to graduation, the Dean of Students Office (DOS) provides support and guidance in non-academic areas to all students in the University. Helping students achieve academic success and encouraging them to exhibit the highest standards of professionalism in their chosen fields is at the very center of what we do. This is accomplished by enabling students to freely access the services and support mechanisms they need to achieve their professional goals and enhance their personal growth during their tenure at St. George’s University. Academic advice and referrals, individual advancement program advisement, mid-term and end-term progress assessments, and monitoring student progress through the curriculum, and managing the Fitness and Wellness Center are just a few of the services we offer.

All students who have cognitive or non-cognitive concerns are provided with a wide range of support services, and the DOS serves as a student advocate in accessing needed services on- or off-campus. For additional ongoing support, the DOS assigns faculty advisors to matriculated students as part of its Faculty Advisor Program. The advisor becomes personally acquainted with the student’s goals, strengths, and challenges, and serves as a source of support and advice throughout the student’s tenure at the University.

The DOS supports over 60 student organizations that enhance student life by promoting a variety of activities with a range of goals: religious, cultural, professional, political, social, and academic.

The Office of Career Guidance and Student Development (OCGSD) is staffed by associates of University Support Services, and faculty and alumni of St. George’s University School of Medicine.  The OCGSD is designed to assist medical students in their pursuit of obtaining postgraduate residencies and postgraduate opportunities. Complete information on examination requirements, clinical timeline guidance,  and obtaining postgraduate training is provided to help students navigate the residency application process.

The OCGSD also advises students on USMLE preparation, counsels students in specialty and residency selection, interview skills, CV/PS preparation, and the residency application process in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other non-US programs. OCGSD advisors provide an invaluable service and we cannot overemphasize the benefits of utilizing their expertise. All conversations and communications are considered personal and confidential.

The OCGSD also acts as a liaison with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

    School of Veterinary Medicine

The primary mission of the SVM Office of Career Guidance and Student Development (SVM OCGSD) is to facilitate the professional and personal goals of veterinary medical students.   The SVM OCGSD is staffed by SVM administrators and faculty and is committed to equipping veterinary medical students with the tools they need to be successful in their professional lives.

The SVM OCGSD is designed to provide placement opportunities for postgraduate, fourth-year clinical students, and veterinary medical students in the first three years of the DVM curriculum. This is accomplished by maintaining placement and professional development resources including information on mentorship, externship, and job opportunities.

    • Career placement services are obtained through collaboration with public and private partners who offer their practices for employment, externship, and mentorship opportunities.
    • Mentorship programs allow students to shadow clinicians thereby gaining practical experience to build their diagnostic ability, medical skills, surgical knowledge, client communication and basic science knowledge.
    • Clinics may vary in their daily operations; however, the objective is to permit students to improve their proficiency in veterinary medicine.
    • Practices that provide externship opportunities generally set the job requirements, handle the approval process, provide placements during specific periods, and allow students to explore their career paths.

Our mentors, advisors and alumni provide career coaching for students and we cannot overemphasize the benefits of utilizing their expertise.

At the SVM OCGSD, we ensure that our veterinary students have the tools and partners to navigate the transition from students to professionals. All conversations and communications are considered personal and confidential.

The Office of the University Registrar supports the instructional and student progress endeavors of the University by providing quality services to students, faculty, academic and administrative departments, and the public.
