Choosing where to study medicine is a major decision no matter where you are from. St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada offers a unique path for international students to earn a respected medical degree while gaining crucial hands-on clinical experience to prepare you for residency.
SGU’s network of more than 23,000 graduates, many of whom are international, have gone on to practice in every US state and over 50 countries around the world.1
In this blog, you’ll hear directly from graduates from countries around the globe—like India, Nigeria, and Malaysia—on why they chose SGU. From strong academics and clinical training to personal support and global connections, their stories show how SGU helped them achieve their dreams of becoming doctors.
Preparation and support that transforms students into physicians
SGU provides students with the academic training, clinical experience, and support systems needed to succeed in medical school and beyond. The combination of rigorous coursework, hands-on clinical rotations, and comprehensive support helps students build the skills and confidence needed to become successful physicians.
Yat Ching Fung, MD ’24, appreciates how SGU’s curriculum was built for comprehension and knowledge he would need in his career rather than just test scores. Dr. Fung, originally from Hong Kong, is an obstetrics and gynecology resident at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital in Dearborn, MI.
“The school provides not only didactic lectures but problem-based learning, small group tutorials, and iMCQs [a database of multiple-choice questions for exam preparation] where I learned the materials with my colleagues,” he says. Regular assessments helped him stay on track while collaborative learning prepared him to think critically in clinical settings.
That sense of readiness is echoed by Ogenetega “Jeremiah” Madedor, MD ’20, an infectious disease resident at MedStar Health – Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Madedor, who is originally from Nigeria before living in the US and UK, describes his SGU journey as “challenging,” but “wouldn’t change that for the world because it prepared me for the roadblocks ahead.”
“SGU took a student who was a potential diamond in the mine and refined him,” he says. “With great resources, teaching, and great hospitals to rotate at, my experience couldn’t have been any better.”
Sarthak Kulshreshtha, MD ’23, originally from India, highlighted the role of SGU’s Department of Educational Services (DES) in his journey. Today, Dr. Kulshreshtha, is a family medicine resident at University of Illinois College of Medicine.
“They offer tutoring, academic coaching, workshops, and study resources,” he says. “Those tools were key in preparing me for the USMLE and for clinical success.”
A globally diverse, inclusive community in Grenada and beyond
One of the most distinctive parts of the SGU medical school experience is the sense that you’re not just joining a university, you’re joining a global community. With students, graduates, and faculty from over 150 countries, SGU provides an environment where diverse backgrounds are welcomed and supported, and where your aspirations to practice anywhere are truly achievable.2
For Dr. Madedor, the diversity of the student body and faculty created a sense of belonging right away.
“SGU was the perfect fit due to the diversity of the student body, professors, and new cultural experiences of the island,” he shares. “I felt at home on the island from day one and in my clinical rotations at Brooklyn Hospital.”
Geraldine Nabeta, MD ’23, also found community as an international student from Uganda. The combination of cultural familiarity and institutional support helped her navigate medical school with confidence.
“There is opportunity to build community with other African students—which has been a very joyful part of my time at SGU,” says Dr. Nabeta, an internal medicine resident at the University of Connecticut.
Campus environment and facilities
In the Caribbean, SGU’s Grenada campus offers more than just a place to study, as it provides an environment that supports both academic success and personal well-being. The modern facilities, beautiful surroundings, and convenient campus layout make it easy for students to focus on their education while enjoying life outside the classroom.
Resha Ganthan, MD ’23, who is originally from Malaysia, appreciated how easy it was to settle into life on campus.
“The campus in Grenada is very modern. There are multiple study halls located across campus that made studying easy,” says Dr. Ganthan, an internal medicine resident at Richmond University Medical Center.
Dr. Kulshreshtha also valued the campus environment, noting the high-quality facilities, including a well-equipped simulation lab.
“The teaching quality was high, and excellent student support services were available,” he says.
For students seeking balance, SGU’s campus offers a safe and supportive space to both study and relax. The secure environment, combined with modern facilities, ensures that students have everything they need to succeed.
A pathway to your medical future
SGU’s international graduates show that with the right environment, support, and training, medical school success is within reach no matter where you’re from. Their journeys reflect the global opportunities and strong foundation SGU provides.
