  • Journey to become an MD: Steps to becoming a doctor
  • After being introduced to medical specialties during medical school, you will begin the residency application process to choose a specialty. The application process is designed to match the preferences of applicants with the needs and requirements of residency programs.

    Choosing a specialty

Before embarking on the residency application process, you must decide which specialty aligns best with your interests, lifestyle, and long-term career goals. This decision is often influenced by clinical experiences, mentorship, and personal reflection.

    Applying to programs

Once a specialty is selected, the next step is to apply to residency programs. This involves preparing a strong application with several components including:

All of these elements should showcase your clinical experiences and extracurricular activities to help you stand out. With so many facets to the process, we put together information on the application milestones, evaluation criteria, and advice from SGU insiders.

    The residency interview

After your application materials are submitted, the next step is scheduling residency interviews. These interviews are a critical component in the selection process. It is when program administrators assess the interpersonal skills, professionalism, and suitability of a candidate. Interviews also provide an opportunity for you to evaluate aspects of the residency program including culture, faculty, and training environment.

To help prepare, you can do mock interviews and get feedback from mentors or peers. These efforts can significantly improve interview performance. It helps to refine answers, improve body language, and boost overall confidence. We have provided some preparation tips and insights on residency interview questions.
