Psychological Services Center

The Psychological Services Center (PSC) offers a wide variety of private and confidential psychological services to SGU students, staff, faculty and their significant others. Additionally, the PSC staff is involved in an assortment of pro bono, mental health related projects in the Grenadian community.

PSC programs range from outreach and crisis consultation to confidential counseling and psychotherapy. Our clinicians can assist with navigating much of the more challenging aspects of the human experience, including such possible problems as:

  • Interpersonal conflicts
  • Self-esteem, personal growth and well-being
  • Sexuality and gender issues
  • Alcohol and drug concerns
  • Disordered eating
  • Understanding cultural differences
  • Adjusting to Grenada and SGU
  • Anxiety and stress management
  • Depression
  • Loss and grief
  • Concentration difficulties

The PSC provides a variety of services including:

  • Individual counseling and psychotherapy
  • Psychoeducational groups
  • Relationship, family and couples therapy
  • Performance enhancement/learning strategies
  • Learning disability and ADHD evaluations
  • Alcohol and drug programs
  • Emergency and crisis intervention
  • Trainings, workshops and seminars (e.g., coping with stress, substanse abuse)

Q: Who are the PSC clinicians?

Q: What are the most critical stress factors for students in the university setting?

A: Particularly stressful are:

  • Arrival in Grenada - adjustment to university life and the pressure of studies in a new environment without accustomed supports of home.
  • Attempting to concentrate on rigorous studies when distressed by the normal worries of what is oftentimes everyday human life.
  • Transitioning from the campus in Grenada to one’s career or the next step in the training process.


Q: What if I have a psychological emergency?
 
A: PSC clinicians are available 24-hours a day for psychological emergencies. They can be accessed outside of normal business hours via security, dormitory resident assistants and the health clinic. More information is provided at the Emergencies page of www.sgu.edu/psc.

Q: Can I be assured of privacy and confidentiality at the PSC?

A: Yes, the PSC functions independently of the university administration and all academic decision-making. All PSC clinicians adhere very strictly to the current Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct of the American Psychological Association and/or other requirements of appropriate licensing boards.

Q: Is there a charge for use of the PSC?

A: No, services are provided free-of-charge to users. Any member of the SGU community who could benefit is encouraged to make contact with the PSC. Seeking help is seen as a sign of good mental health.
