Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program

Your Pathway to Global Medicine

Program Overview

The Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program (KBTGSP) is an exciting option for medical students who want to gain a global perspective on health care during their medical school journey.

Students in the KBTGSP complete the first year of the Basic Sciences phase of the Four-year medical degree program on the campus of Northumbria University in Newcastle-on-Tyne in the United Kingdom.

The KBTGSP is an ideal international program for medical students who wish to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree and want to devote at least a portion of their professional lives to the service of developing countries, underserved regions of the world, or international NGOs.

To gain insight into the National Health Service, KBTGSP students have the opportunity to participate in the Early Clinical Exposure selective, in which they will engage in a physician-shadowing experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, a short drive from Northumbria University’s Newcastle campus.

The public lecture series for St. George’s University medical students in the KBTGSP is geared towards topics in global health.  Students have a well-rounded view of medicine across the globe after their year in this program as they join their classmates in Grenada.

Curriculum

KBTGSP students receive the same intensive medical education as they would in the first-year basic science curriculum on the Grenada campus — including the same textbooks, exams and academic schedule.

Additionally, you can gain an international perspective as you progress in your MD degree through formal guest lectures delivered by eminent physicians and health care professionals. Their topics are pertinent to global health medicine, such as maternal and child health, mental health, and disease eradication strategies.

On-site SGU associate department chairs and/or course directors oversee the consistency and quality between the Grenada and UK programs.

Requirements

The academic admission requirements for the KBTGSP are the same as those for direct entry into SGU’s first term of Basic Sciences in the School of Medicine in Grenada.

Application

To participate, simply:

  1. Apply for admission to the SGU School of Medicine.
  2. Make a clear note on your application that you would like to be considered for the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program.
Scholarship & Tuition

SGU offers international students who intend to practice medicine in underserved areas the Global Medicine Scholarship based on financial need.

United States citizens and permanent residents of the US who attend the KBTGSP program will not be eligible to receive USDOE loans in any part of their medical education at SGU (either in the KBTGSP program, 2nd year in Grenada or the clinical years). Student federal loan eligibility, for all foreign medical schools, is now dependent on taking the basic science portion of the program on the main campus.

Campus Location & Housing

The Northumbria University campus is situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is routinely chosen as one of the best student cities in the UK.

Why do students from around the world love the city?

Newcastle is a modern city with ancient roots. Our students enjoy seeing the remnants of Hadrian’s Wall along the West Road, and enjoy equally the bustling pubs, sporting venues, green spaces, multiscreen cinema complex, and thriving arts scene. Have a long weekend? You can visit continental Europe in just a few hours by train.

Student Housing

Students enrolled in the KBTGSP are housed together in the Trinity Square residence building.

Just a 20-minute walk or a quick bus or Metro ride from the Northumbria University city campus, Trinity Square puts you in the heart of Newcastle. Most students are required to live in University housing for their entire year in the UK.

Please note: US Citizens and permanent residents of the United States who attend the KBTGSP program will not be eligible to receive USDOE loans throughout their medical education at SGU. Student federal loan eligibility, for all foreign medical schools, is dependent on taking the Basic Science portion of the program on the main campus.
