Global Impact, Local Pride: Celebrating SGU’s Class of 2025

St. George’s University celebrated a proud moment as the Schools of Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies honored the Class of 2025 on Saturday, May 17, during the Grenada Commencement Ceremony held at Patrick F. Adams Hall. With more than 300 graduates representing over 24 countries, the hall was brimming with joy and anticipation as the graduates crossed the stage, cheered on by their loved ones.

This year’s distinguished class included more than 190 graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences and 133 from the School of Graduate Studies. Additionally, 9 new Grenadian physicians from the School of Medicine and two veterinarians from the School of Veterinary Medicine joined the festivities, celebrating their accomplishments alongside their peers.

The University was also pleased to have in attendance specially invited guest, Grenada’s Prime Minister, the Honorable Dickon Mitchell, who made the time to share in the moment with the graduates and their families.

“It was a true honor to attend St. George’s University’s Commencement Ceremony and witness such a remarkable milestone for the graduating class. The inspiring words shared today reminded us that where we begin does not limit the heights we can achieve. Congratulations to all graduates, may your next chapter be filled with purpose, ambition, and success.”

Delivering an unforgettable keynote address was Ashley Lashley, a global leader in youth, health, and climate advocacy. As a UNICEF Youth Advocate, CARICOM Youth Ambassador, and former Miss World Barbados, Ashley has captivated audiences around the world with her tireless efforts to empower youth and build a more sustainable future. Her message to the Class of 2025 was one of courage, commitment, and hope.

“As you turn your tassel and walk across this stage, I ask you to carry something more than your degree, carry your humanity,” she said. “And remember, you are not here by chance. You are here because the world needs you; your voice, your vision, and your truth.”

Representing the School of Graduate Studies as class speaker was Candice Benjamin, BSc ’13, currently a demonstrator and course director in the School of Arts and Sciences. She shared a heartfelt reflection of her journey, graduating today with a Master of Education, alongside some of her students.

“Standing here today, after years of growth, setbacks, and fresh starts, this moment carries even deeper meaning. SGU has been more than just a university to me. It has been my home, a space where ambition was tested, dreams were shaped, and resilience was truly forged.”

SGU also celebrated the top 10 percent of its Master of Public Health graduates, inducting them into the University’s Gamma Kappa chapter of the Delta Omega Honor Society, the world’s oldest public health honor society, for their excellence in education and scholarship in research and service.

Shaunkya Baptiste, SAS valedictorian

The pride of the School of Arts and Sciences was perfectly captured by Shaunkya Baptiste, this year’s valedictorian. Completing her Bachelor of Science in biology, Shaunyka reflected on the power of perseverance.

“Along this journey, I’ve discovered three lessons that continue to guide me. First, welcome the unexpected, it often leads to the most meaningful growth. Second, seize the present moment; now is always the right time to act. And third, cherish the relationships we build, because they form the foundation that sustains us through every step forward.”

SGU will host its Schools of Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine commencement ceremonies at Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York on June 7-8, where hundreds more graduates will take the next step in their professional journeys.
