HIST 200 Caribbean Slave Society

Caribbean slave society examines the characteristics of slave societies and other systems of un-free labour in the Caribbean. The debate on the origins of slavery is investigated. The course examines the experiences of enslaved people and the strategies they used to survive their enslavement. It examines the retention of Africanisms in present day Caribbean society. It also investigates the factors responsible for the dismantlement of slave systems, by examining the different forms of rebellion, economic arguments for ending slavery and the abolition movement. The course discusses the present day debate on reparation for the descendants of enslaved Caribbean people and the impact of slavery on the Caribbean today
