SAMS 538 Topics in Veterinary Pain Management

This course is aimed at students with an interest in veterinary analgesia. It focuses on providing a thorough understanding of the physiology and pathology of nociception and pain, its assessment and the pharmacology of analgesic drugs including novel agents.
Emphasis is placed on practicing the development of analgesic protocols for clinical cases in a wide range of species. Professional ethics in regard to approaches to pain management are discussed. The lab section teaches basic practical skills in local and regional anesthesia.
