NURS 406 Global Service Learning and Professional Development & Practicum

Global service-learning in nursing provides an opportunity for students to acquire cultural competence, and experience practice-based skills within an unfamiliar cultural context. Service-learning offers an opportunity for students to experience different cultures and through reflection, transformational cognitive development, and the use of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to solve real-life issues. on an extensive literature review, McKinnon and Fealy (2011) developed a framework for program development of global service-learning in nursing. The framework includes the Seven Cs of global service-learning: compassion, curiosity, courage, collaboration, creativity, competence, and capacity building. By working with people of different ethnicities, lifestyles, and socioeconomic statuses, the nursing student’s learning and understanding of social, cultural and health issues will increase.
